Maria had originally planned to apply her creative skills in the beauty industry but after studying an NVQ in beauty therapy realised it wasn't for her, and so like many of her family members turned to construction. She joined Skanska as an apprentice technician in September 2015.
"The opportunities in the areas I had studied were low and in my mind the apprentice scheme at Skanska offered me a different experience to the ones I had already had. Skanska has a good reputation and I knew I would get opportunities to learn and still be able to apply my creative skills."
Maria completed her apprenticeship in 2016 and became a technician supervisor on a project in Skanska's piling and foundations business in Doncaster. Since then she continues to excel and recently received an Early Career Technician Award by the Federation of Piling Specialists.
