Frequently

asked questions

Some questions we’ve been asked

Can I apply for more than one role?

We would recommend that you apply for the role that interests you most. If you would like to be considered for another role too, or we feel your skills might be better suited to another position, we’ll discuss this with you.

If I’ve been unsuccessful, can I apply again?

If you haven’t been successful in your application, you can’t be considered for an alternative position for that same year. You’ll only be eligible to re-apply for the following year’s vacancies.

Can I receive feedback on my application?

Yes. You can request feedback from the Emerging Talent team at any stage of the recruitment process.

Where will my interview/assessment centre be held?

Interviews for trainees and apprentices will take place in the location of the role. Graduates and intern assessment centres take place at our head office in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.

If I’m successful at gaining a place on an assessment centre, will my travel costs be reimbursed?

Yes. When we send you your official invitation for the assessment day, we’ll also include information about how we reimburse your travel costs. We aim to pay these back to you within two weeks of attending an assessment centre.

When will I find out if I’ve been successful after I’ve been through the assessment centre?

We’ll give you feedback over the telephone within seven days.

If I’m successful, where will I be based?

We have offices and project sites all around the UK. Our trainee and apprenticeship locations are likely to appear on the advert, so look out for these when you apply. As an intern or graduate, you’ll need to be reasonably flexible when it comes to location. This is especially important for graduates because the scheme is rotational.

I have a disability, can adjustments be made?

If you have any kind of disability, we can adapt the selection process to allow you to perform at your best. You’ll need to declare this on your application form so a member of the team can contact you to discuss and understand your needs. If you would like to talk to a member of the team before submitting an application, please send an email to emerging.talent@skanska.co.uk

I graduated five years ago; can I still apply for a graduate scheme with Skanska?

Yes, we accept applications from anyone who has graduated within the past five years.

What does Skanska’s drugs and alcohol policy mean for me?

You will be working in an environment that has significant risks to the health and safety of you and your colleagues. Therefore, we will not tolerate any employee who arrives for work under the influence of drugs (including legal highs) or alcohol. All Skanska UK employees, regardless of job, location or level are subject to testing throughout the year. This may be random or “with cause” (if your manager suspects you may be under the influence or an accident or incident has taken place).

In addition to this information, we provide a leaflet when you join Skanska which sets out our expectations but also helps you understand that some drugs can stay in your system for months (such as cannabis, which accumulates over time). Every unit of alcohol you drink takes at least an hour to leave your body. That means you could test positive the morning after drinking or a week or more after taking some types of drugs.

When can I apply for a graduate role?

Our graduate roles for September 2017 are now open. Please see the job advert for the closing date for each role. Immediate start positions do regularly become available, so please keep an eye out if you’re able to start straight away.

Will I receive training as part of my programme?

Yes, you’ll get all the training and support you need to help you fulfil your role.

Do you accept BEng or MEng Degrees?

We accept Batchelor's and Masters of Science, Engineering or Arts degree for our programmes, as long as the degree is relevant for the role. If you are uncertain, please contact the team at emerging.talent@skanska.co.uk.

When will I find out if my application has been successful?

Our response rates can vary depending on the role that you have applied to. We'll come back to you within one month of the application closing date.
